This book is much more than a guide book and is aptly described by its Sussex-born author, Malcolm Saville, as the 'consummation of a long love affair'.  The reader will be fascinated not only by the evocative story of Rye's 'Vanished Men' through the town's long recorded history, but by being taken on a series of walks around the streets.

'Portrait of Rye' was first published in 1976 and original copies are now rarely available to purchase.  Mark O'Hanlon revised the book in 1999 and this edition has new illustrations by John Allsup.  The book will appeal not only to readers and collectors of Malcolm Saville's work but also to those people who have fallen under the spell of this enchanting Sussex town.
